Why the Year of the Cat?
While most East Asian countries celebrate 2023 as the Year of the Rabbit according to the Chinese zodiac, Vietnam and some other cultures replace the rabbit with the cat in their zodiac cycle. This is because the Vietnamese word for the zodiac sign corresponding to the rabbit, pronounced "Mão" in Mandarin, sounds like "Mèo", the Vietnamese word for cat. Thus, the Year of the Cat is celebrated instead, embodying traits similar to the rabbit such as carefulness, playfulness, independence, and protectiveness.
Legend has it that the cat was tricked by the rat and missed the original zodiac banquet, which is why it was excluded from the Chinese zodiac. However, Vietnamese tradition holds that the cat did manage to cross the river and took the rabbit's place in the zodiac, making 2023 a special year for cat enthusiasts.
So, as we embrace this unique "Year of the Cat", let's celebrate with joy and the charming antics of our beloved feline companions!
