Moved by a Thought: My First Rabbit Adoption
The moment I first decided to adopt from the Rabbit Lovers Association and bring home Dingshan, it marked my very first experience adopting a rabbit. From the very beginning, I never set any restrictions on location. I believed that trust and understanding between the adopter and the rescuer mattered far more than physical distance.
That's why, even though I live in Kaohsiung, I was more than willing to travel all the way to Taipei's House of Rabbits to adopt. To me, adoption is not just about finding a pet nearby—it's about finding the right connection built on genuine care, faith, and shared love for these gentle creatures.
Understanding Rabbit Adoption
Many people think it's troublesome when they hear they have to go to Taipei for an interview and adoption meeting to adopt a rabbit. The idea of having to schedule a visit and travel across the city might seem inconvenient at first.
But what many don't realize is how much time, effort, and care the volunteers of the Rabbit Lovers Association devote before any rabbit becomes available for adoption. From health checks and behavioral assessments to proper diet and socialization, each step ensures the rabbits can transition safely into loving homes.
Once people understand this background, the interview and adoption process no longer feel like a burden. Instead, they see it as a meaningful step toward ensuring responsible, compassionate ownership and a better life for every rescued rabbit.
The Journey of a Rescued Rabbit
When a rabbit is first rescued, it is often sick or injured and requires multiple veterinary visits and special medical care. Even after recovery, the rabbit still needs to undergo spaying or neutering, post-surgery care, and various types of life training. Throughout this entire process, volunteers dedicate round-the-clock attention, patience, and love—efforts that cannot be measured in numbers.
In terms of time, it usually takes at least half a year for a rabbit to go through the full process—from being rescued to becoming ready for adoption. However, the adoption process itself takes the adopter less than a single day. From my own experience, it involves filling out an online application form, making two trips between Taipei and Kaohsiung for interviews and pickup, and completing all steps within roughly half a day.
Rabbits can be our companions for more than a decade. Spending just one day to truly understand and prepare for life with a future family member is hardly an inconvenience. The medical care and preparation done before each adoption are never taken lightly.
Why I Chose to Adopt from the Rabbit Society
In my first paragraph, I mentioned that trust and shared values matter more than physical distance. Choosing to adopt from the Rabbit Society was a natural decision because I identify with the organization's principles and mission.
The Rabbit Society is a legally registered public welfare organization with a clear and transparent adoption process. Detailed information about adoption requirements and each rabbit's condition is readily available on their website.
For me, these three factors—comprehensive information, a well-structured process, and the organization's professionalism—removed much of the uncertainty and anxiety that often come with adoption. As a first-time adopter, that sense of reassurance was truly invaluable.
Trust and Privacy in Pet Adoption
Beyond the reasons mentioned above, there is also a very practical concern: can I safely entrust my personal information to the other party?
When adopting a rabbit, the adopter is usually required to fill out an adoption application form. Later, during the handover, both the fosterer and the adopter sign a written agreement, which includes personal information on both sides.
Regardless of who you are in the process, when it comes to exchanging personal data, everyone naturally prefers to deal with someone trustworthy.

The Rabbit Lovers Association is a legally registered non-profit organization. This means it not only has a well-structured system but is also subject to legal supervision, which undoubtedly adds considerable credibility.
In addition, all of the Association's operations and records are open and transparent. Adopters can easily learn about the organization's adoption practices through its official website.
Another noteworthy point is that the website's information is neatly organized. I believe that an adopter who pays such close attention to these small details must also handle documentation and administrative matters with great care. In fact, my experience has confirmed that this belief is true.
What Is the Adoption Interview Like?
Some people might feel a bit nervous when they hear there will be an interview. But really, if you've done your homework about how to properly care for a rabbit and have filled out the adoption form carefully, the volunteer's questions will be easy to answer naturally.
During the interview, the volunteer will first review your application form with you to confirm the information. Once that's done, the main focus will be questions related to the rabbit's future life — for example: Which area of your home have you prepared for the rabbit? How will you set up its living space? If the rabbit gets sick, which veterinary clinic will you take it to? — and similar practical topics.
After that, you'll be given some time to interact with the rabbit one-on-one and get comfortable with each other. From my experience, the entire interview process is quite pleasant and reassuring.
Reflections After Adoption
I'd like to share a few thoughts after adopting my rabbits. I now have two—Dingshan and Mocha—both adopted from the Rabbit Lovers Association. I have to say, the association's lifestyle training is truly impressive. Both of them use their litter boxes on their own, so I never have to worry about accidents. Their good toilet habits save me a lot of time when cleaning up each day.
If someone asks me in the future why I chose to adopt from the Rabbit Lovers Association, the answer would be simple: their rabbits come with wonderful living habits—that alone makes the experience even more rewarding.
