Many cat owners might think that if their cat doesn't finish the canned food, the cat will come back to eat later when hungry. Because of this, they often don't refrigerate the opened can immediately but leave it out for a while. However, do you know how long an opened can of cat food can safely remain at room temperature?
Why Wet Cat Food Spoils Faster Than Dry Food
Wet cat food is more prone to bacterial growth compared to dry food because it contains a high amount of moisture and organic matter, creating an ideal environment for microorganisms to thrive. In fact, wet food begins to gradually spoil the moment it is exposed to air after opening.
Generally, it is recommended that opened canned food be left at room temperature for no more than 2 to 4 hours. However, if the indoor environment is hot, humid, and poorly ventilated, bacteria such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli can multiply rapidly, causing the food to spoil within just 2 hours.
Proper Handling of Wet Cat Food
Spoiled wet cat food will become dry, lumpy, and develop an unpleasant odor. If a cat accidentally eats spoiled wet food, it may lead to gastrointestinal infections. In cases where mold grows on the food, the cat might exhibit poisoning symptoms such as trembling and vomiting due to mycotoxins.
If your cat cannot finish an entire can of wet food at once, you can store the remaining portion in a sealed container and refrigerate it. At 4°C (39°F), the food can be safely kept for about 3 days, but it should never be stored for more than 5 days.
If your cat dislikes eating cold food directly from the fridge, you can warm the food by microwaving it for 10 to 15 seconds before serving.
Wet vs. Dry Cat Food: Feeding Tips
Compared to dry cat food, wet cat food has the advantage of a higher moisture content, which can be beneficial for your cat's hydration. However, it is also more challenging to store properly. Therefore, when you open a can of wet food, don't just feed it and leave the rest unattended.
If you notice that your cat consistently eats only a small amount each time, it's important to reassess and adjust their feeding schedule and portion sizes accordingly. Proper management will help ensure your cat maintains a healthy diet and avoids food spoilage.
