Makayla Fortner, a compassionate 15-year-old girl from Alexander, Arkansas, was tragically killed after being attacked by a pack of 30 to 40 neglected and starving dogs she had been caring for. The incident occurred on June 11, 2025, on a private property where the dogs were kept within a fenced area.
Background of the Incident
Makayla and her mother, Stephanie Wilkie, had been trying to help a large group of dogs owned by an elderly couple in their 80s who had recently moved to the area. The dogs, including pit bulls and hounds, were severely neglected and often left to roam the streets, causing distress among local residents. Neighbors had repeatedly complained to local authorities about the uncontrolled and aggressive behavior of the dogs, but officials cited the absence of an animal control department in the county and failed to take effective action.
The Attack
On the afternoon of June 11, while Makayla was feeding the dogs inside the secure fenced area, the pack suddenly turned aggressive and attacked her. Emergency responders arrived promptly after a 911 call but found Makayla fatally injured. A deputy had to fire two shots into the ground to disperse the dogs. Despite efforts, Makayla succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Aftermath and Community Response
Following the attack, animal control officials seized 14 dogs deemed dangerous and euthanized them. Four other dogs locked inside the house were taken into custody by animal protection agencies. Neighbors expressed sorrow and frustration, lamenting that earlier intervention might have prevented this tragedy. One neighbor stated, "I think the government failed us."
In honor of Makayla, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist her family with funeral expenses and other costs. The fundraising page described her as a "beautiful, bright girl with the kindest soul," deeply loved by family and friends. Over 600 people contributed, raising more than $43,000 (approximately 1.27 million New Taiwan dollars).
Legacy
Makayla was also a member of the Bryant Lady Hornet soccer team, which posted a tribute on social media remembering her as kind, thoughtful, hardworking, and passionate. Her untimely death has deeply affected the community, highlighting the dangers of animal neglect and the urgent need for proper animal control measures.
