Interacting with pets not only brings joy and fulfillment, but engaging in outdoor activities together can also improve physical health. Moreover, pets are a great remedy for relieving stress and alleviating feelings of loneliness.
In recent years, besides cats and dogs, more and more people have welcomed birds, amphibians, reptiles, and various exotic pets into their families. However, if you plan to travel with your pet, it is important to be aware of Taiwan Railways' regulations regarding animals on board — many people remain unaware of these rules.
According to reports from media outlets TVBS and SET News, a recent incident involved a passenger bringing a pet ball python onto a train. It appears the snake was not properly secured, causing it to slither out and hide under a seat cushion in the carriage. This led Taiwan Railways to urgently change the train's composition to continue service and call the fire department to capture the snake. Consequently, the train was delayed by 4 minutes.
Following the incident, Taiwan Railways posted a reminder on their official Facebook page emphasizing passenger safety and train order. To maintain a comfortable travel environment, the carriage of snakes, wild beasts, and other animals that may endanger others is strictly prohibited. Failure to comply or ignoring warnings can result in fines ranging from NT$1,500 to NT$7,500, according to Article 71 of the Taiwan Railway Act.
For passengers traveling with cats, dogs, rabbits, fish, shrimp, turtles, pet birds, rodents (excluding common house mice and fancy mice), and similar animals, the pets must be placed inside a container or bag no larger than 55 × 45 × 38 cm (excluding wheels and stroller handles). The container must be securely closed, odor-free, and leak-proof, and must be stored under the seat.
Guide dogs, assistance dogs, and government service dogs are also legally permitted to travel on trains without these restrictions.
In summary, while traveling with pets can be a wonderful experience, it is essential to follow Taiwan Railways' guidelines to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.
