Not a Sunshower, But Cicada Urine: A Surprising Weather Phenomenon in China

The term "sunshower" refers to a weather phenomenon where rain falls while the sun is shining brightly or the sky remains clear. Recently in China, some people walking under the blazing sun found themselves suddenly getting sprinkled by droplets of water. However, what they encountered was not a sunshower at all. When one man looked up, he was nearly left speechless by what he saw.

According to a report by the Chinese media outlet NetEase News, a man in Xiamen was walking beneath the roadside trees near a school when he noticed it was "drizzling". Yet, the sky was clear and the sun hung high overhead. Curious, he looked up and discovered that the droplets falling on him were actually cicada urine.

Cicadas feed by sucking sap from plants, but since most of the sap consists of water and has low nutritional value, cicadas must consume nearly 300 times their own body weight in sap daily. To manage this, they rapidly excrete the excess water, essentially urinating as much as they drink. This has evolved into a highly efficient jet-like urination method.

Additionally, when startled or threatened, cicadas collectively accelerate their urination to quickly take flight and escape danger.

Intrigued by the fact that what cicadas consume and excrete is essentially sap, the man even dared to open his mouth and catch some of the "cicada urine" to taste it. He found it had a faint grassy flavor with a hint of sweetness, which amazed him greatly.
