Have you ever noticed that when you talk to your cat, it slowly narrows its eyes? At times, you might wonder: "Is the cat happy, or is it just sleepy?" Japanese pet columnist SHIHO reveals the truth behind this behavior. Let's find out what your cat is trying to tell you when it narrows its eyes!
SHIHO explains that when you softly speak to your cat and it narrows its eyes, this action actually expresses "no ill intentions." It means your cat is relaxed and trusts you. For cats, staring directly into another's eyes can be perceived as a challenge or warning. For example, in the wild, when two unfamiliar cats face off, staring at each other is like saying, "What's up? Ready to fight?"
However, there are exceptions. If a cat has a very close relationship with its owner, even direct eye contact can simply mean the cat wants to cuddle, is looking for food, or is curious about you.
So, this little act of narrowing the eyes is actually your cat's way of showing love and trust.
SHIHO suggests that if you receive this expression of affection from your cat, you can return the gesture! It's simple to do: gently look into your cat's eyes, then slowly close your eyes, and slowly open them again, taking about two to three seconds. This action says, "I won't hurt you, I like you."
Science has also confirmed that when humans do this slow blink, cats often respond with the same slow blink. This means they're communicating through their eyes in a kind of cross-species emotional exchange!
So even though cats don't speak, they might express love every day with their eyes and body language. Learning to understand your cat's heart can make your life together sweeter and fill it with more harmony!
